Irkutsk - Rest Day

6SEP - Today is Saturday and the town square is full of folks enjoying the Fall day and the many vendors displaying their crafts.

The city has many churches dating back several hundred years. Some are next to the 1950s government buildings that date to the communist era.

Today is also a day for weddings. I walked to the river and watched four wedding parties toss whatever into the river as all cheered. Must be something for good luck. On the bridge over to the river park there are hundreds, if not thousands, of padlocks attached to the bridge. Just like Lovelock, NV, but I suspect Lovelock copied the idea based on the age of the padlocks here.

Tomorrow we'll continue NW on M55 and hope to find lodging somewhere near Nizhneudinsk. Between here and Krasnoyarsk there are only small villages. Translated, the hotels are too small to list on the various web sites. Hopefully we'll find something, even a 'truckers' motel will do as we near 18:00.

Day after tomorrow we'll arrive in Krasnoyarsk, the first city in Russia we'll come to that has a BMW Motorrad Dealer. Then it'll be another 2,667 miles to Moscow and the next BMW Motorrad dealer. There are quite a few motorcycle dealers along our route so far but they are 'one of a kind' mechanics that repair the Chinese motorcycles. The 'Adventure' riders we see riding East, two to six a day, are riding Beemers, various GS models.

The 'electrics' will come out tomorrow morning. Fall IS here.

  1. I just read Ross's outline of the first couple of days in Russia. Doug sure does a lot of editing

  2. Is there some special meaning for the padlocks on the bridge?
